From Your Pastor
Have you ever been in this situation? You purchase a very special gift for your child or grandchild? Something they've really wanted for a long time? And on the happy occasion when they finally receive your gift, it breaks within minutes or hours...or worse doesn't work properly right out of the box? How frustrating is that?
Well, if we've lived long enough, we know life can be that way too. We're unwrapping it one day at a time and some days are great, some start out that way, but soon turn into a mess, and some days are broken from the very start. If we rely upon every day in our lives working all the time, we will always be frustrated. Sometimes life is just plain broken and it takes time to fix.
Back a couple years ago James W. Moore wrote a little study book entitled, "Christmas Gifts That Won't Break." I've incorporated some of his ideas into our Advent and Christmas worship series, "The Unbreakable Gifts of God." Each Sunday we're looking at one of those traditional themes of the Advent Season and discerning together what it is about that gift - be it love, peace, joy, or hope - that when it comes from God, nothing in this world can break it.
This, of course, leads us to consider the greatest, most enduring gift of all - the unbreakable gift of Jesus - and the celebration of Christmas. He is the Light of the world, and he comes, Emmanuel, to be God's presence (and presents) with us.
